It didn’t take long for Ozzie Guillen to find himself in another controversy.
In his first season with the Miami Marlins, the outspoken manager made perhaps his largest speaking blunder last week when he said he respects former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
“I respect Fidel Castro,” Guillen was quoted as saying. “You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that motherf---er is still there."
Guillen needs to think before he talks, otherwise fiascos like this will continue to arise.
In an age where everything a high-profile figure says is recorded, Guillen better be extra careful about what he says.
Many players in MLB hail from Cuba, such as Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman and Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar. In addition, many Cubans reside in Miami because of its close proximity to the country.
To say the comments made by Guillen are offensive to those Cuban natives is a drastic understatement.
Guillen apologized for his comments, but the damage was already done. He will serve a five-game suspension given out by the Marlins.
