It was Saturday and I was watching college football like any normal person would.
As I’m watching ESPN, they cut to the Tulsa-Tulane game to bring highlights to the viewers, and I thought to myself, “Why does anybody care about what happens in the game?” Then, I saw “the play.”
It looked like any ordinary play: Tulsa halfback was tackled by a couple of Tulane players, end of story. Except it wasn’t. Not for Tulane safety Devon Walker. After colliding helmets with a teammate, Walker stopped breathing. CPR was administered and he thankfully was revived right there on the field. The senior from New Orleans suffered a cervical spine fracture along with a collapsed lung.
It was a tough sightto watch, not for the gruesome image, but for the fact that for a few moments a man almost lost his life making a simple play in football. It takes a moment like this to help everyone stop and take a step back, put sports behind them, and remember that there are more important things to care about than a game, like life itself.
Life is a precious thing, and sometimes it takes one moment to help us remember how easily it can be taken away.
Thoughts and prayers go out to Walker and his family.
