Boise State smothers ASU wrestling 33-7

Looking to keep its perfect Pac-12 record intact, the ASU wrestling team came up short and fell to Boise State 33-7 Sunday.

For the second straight dual however, the Sun Devils (7-8, 2-1 Pac-12) got off to a quick start.

No. 19 redshirt senior heavyweight Levi Cooper avenged his loss to No. 12 Broncos junior J.T. Felix from earlier in the season, dominating the match 6-0 to give the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead.

Redshirt sophomore Dalton Miller then extended the Sun Devil lead to 7-0, winning a 10-2 major decision over freshman Rami Haddadin.

The Broncos (6-5, 2-1 Pac-12) then reeled off eight straight wins to finish the dual, beginning with 133-pound redshirt senior Brian Owen’s 23-7 tech fall win over ASU freshman Ares Carpio.

149-pound No. 2 sophomore Jason Chamberlain earned the Broncos’ second tech fall of the dual, a 20-5 decision over ASU freshman Preston McCalmon.

Starting for redshirt freshman No. 11 Blake Stauffer for the second straight match, ASU freshman Ray Waters fell to Boise State sophomore Scott Bacon 16-3 by major decision.

In the biggest surprise of the day, ASU redshirt senior No. 5 Jake Meredith lost to Boise State junior Cody Dixon by injury default with only 31 seconds left in the match.

The Sun Devils return home next Sunday to face No. 2 Oklahoma State.
