"Sex and the City" fans have always wondered about what the life of fashionable writer, Carrie Bradshaw, was like before The New York Star and Mr. Big. The CW's adaption of Candace Bushnell's prequel, "The Carrie Diaries," brings Carrie Bradshaw's high school days to life.
"The Carrie Diaries" begins with Bradshaw's (AnnaSophia Robb) junior year of high school in the suburbs of Connecticut in 1984. Dealing with grief of the passing of her mother, young 16-year-old Bradshaw navigates through the dramas of high school with her three friends Mouse, Maggie and Walt. In the first episode however, Carrie is given an opportunity to intern at a law firm in New York City. Thus starts her love for Manhattan, but not without a bit of drama when she befriends a rebellious style editor at a fashion magazine. Carrie must now deal with her life as a high school student and her new life in the wild city.
Many "Sex and the City" fans, including myself, were skeptical when The CW announced that this show was going to be made. But don't be quick to judge! The first episode, which premiered on Monday night, was surprisingly good in my opinion. Although I was a bit frustrated of how the show toned down 1980s fashion, the episode was quite enjoyable and left me with a sense of excitement for the next episode. "The Carrie Diaries" may never fill the Manolo Blahnik's of "Sex and the City," but it will give fans a new story to rejoice in and who really wants the story of Carrie Bradshaw to end?
I give "The Carrie Diaries" three out of five Manolos.
Episode 2 of "The Carrie Diaries" airs Monday Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. on The CW.
