Art of the Matter: DIY Wall Art

Pull away the tape and there you have it: strongly worded wall art.

Art of the Matter: DIY Wall Art

This week I am bringing to you the second installment in what can now be considered Art of the Matter’s Monthly DIY Post!

This month I will make easy art with you. Can’t paint? Don’t’ worry. Can’t draw? It doesn’t matter! This project is super easy, but it makes you look like you’re a crazy good artist. You’re welcome.

Here’s how:

Step 1.

Find or improvise a canvas. I took the improvisational route and cut out one side of a cardboard box that my psychology textbook came in.

Improvise a canvas out of a cardboard box you had lying on your floor. Improvise a canvas out of a cardboard box you had lying on your floor.

Step 2.

Find some magazines from which you can cut out cool images. Then, cut out and glue said images onto your canvas in a creative fashion.  Remember to trim the edges so nothing hangs over the canvas.

Find (don’t buy) over-priced magazines to cut up and deface. Find (don’t buy) over-priced magazines to cut up and deface.

Arrange your clippings into a rainbow because rainbows rock. Arrange your clippings into a rainbow because rainbows rock.

Cut the edges so it doesn’t look ridiculous. Cut the edges so it doesn’t look ridiculous.

Step 3.

Cover your canvas with clear nail polish or hairspray. Allow it to dry. This helps protect the magazine clippings from the tape you will use to form the letters or shapes.

Hairspray the crap out of it. Hairspray the crap out of it.

Step 4.

Using scotch tape or something else adhesive, form the letters or shapes that will remain in color as the rest of your canvas is painted white.

Form a tape shape. Then rhyme about it. Form a tape shape. Then rhyme about it.

Step 5.

Paint the whole canvas one color. Once it has dried, pull the tape away to reveal the shape you made.

Paint over the whole thing with one contrasting color. Paint over the whole thing with one contrasting color.

Step 6.

Display and brag about it.
