Kicking off its tour in Arizona, Satellite Sky, an Indie rock band made up of siblings, Pete and Kim Kicks, rocked the crowd at the Rogue bar in South Scottsdale on Thursday night.
The night was laid back with an intimate crowd of supporters. The band played two of its singles and a cover by Neil Young, in addition to other songs.
The music was energetic and upbeat, with a few songs changing tempo or speed every three eight counts or so. The best way to describe this band’s style is Indie rock with a bit of influences from bands such as Kasabian and The Black Keys.
Kim Kicks is in charge of drums, and she owns it, while Pete Kicks is the main vocalist and guitarist for the band. The audience was able to see her really get into her craft, as she helped her brother Pete complete the tantalizing music with his dynamic guitar playing and his well-tuned vocals.
The Kicks siblings, originally from Melbourne, Australia, have relocated from their homeland to Los Angeles in order to pursue their artistic careers in the music world. Working with producer Paul Lani, who has produced for Prince and U2, In order to produce their extended play. There is no doubt that this ensemble will go far.
Already featured in the Summer Olympics commercial alongside the Black Keys with their single “Got this Feeling,” Satellite Sky has started to make a mark of its own in the music industry.
When asked how the Olympics commercial happened, sibling Kim Kicks joked, “Well I was gonna run in the relay races. … I didn’t qualify.”
“Basically, over in L.A., we had just released this single, 'Got this Feeling,' and it started with a little bit of bars and radio play over there, and people started hearing it. … We got approached by a company who was doing some work with NBC and Budweiser," Pete said. "We initially wanted to pitch that one and also another single, 'I Like it' and ended up choosing, 'Got this Feeling.' … It was us another band and The Black Keys as well.”
As to what made Arizona the first stop, Pete responded, “We love it here.”
That being said, this is the band’s biggest tour to date, with a span of three weeks, ending up in Atlanta eventually.
Along with its tour, Satellite Sky will be heading to SxSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, on the way back from the tour with a few shows lined up.
These siblings are completely multi-talented. They started out in their garage in Australia when Kim got her first drum set and friends started jamming with them. After playing for themselves, Kim and Pete started collaborating until their passion paid off, resulting in the move from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
Satellite Sky is truly a diamond in the rough band with upbeat, rock and roll music. For anyone that loves all things Indie, Satellite Sky is a band they won’t want to miss, and one that will not be low-key for very long.
