An ASU alumnus was killed in Afghanistan Tuesday while working as an infantry officer, according to the University's Army ROTC program.

First Lt. Jonam Russell was working as an infantry officer in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, according to a release from ASU's Army ROTC. He was commissioned as an infantry officer in May of 2011, after graduating from ASU and the program, which prepares students for work in the U.S. Armed Forces.

ASU will hold a memorial service for Russell in Old Main on the Tempe campus at 10 a.m. on Friday, and all who wish to pay their respects are welcome. The ceremony will also be broadcast on YouTube, with a link posted on the Sun Devil Battalion's Facebook page.
