Police: Man steals personal belongings, candy

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Thursday:

  • A 21-year-old Phoenix man was arrested Sept. 26 on the 3200 block of West Lower Buckeye Road on suspicion of armed robbery, according to a police report.

The man entered a Cash for Phones business on the 1400 block of West Southern Avenue and asked an employee if he could sell his Samsung Galaxy S4, police said.

The employee told the man he would need some form of identification to sell the phone, according to the report.

The man then reached into his pocket, retrieved a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at two employees, demanding their cell phones and other personal belongings, police reported.

The man took an iPhone, two backpacks, a wallet containing $5,000 and a box of Chinese candy, according to the report.

The man exited the building and ran north, according to the report.

One of the employees ran after him and saw him get into a red four-door sedan, police said.

The report said the employee told officers the sedan's license plate number.

When officers checked the license plate number, they realized the vehicle had been stopped by police in the past and the driver fit the victim's description of the man, police said.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where his fingerprints were taken, according to the report. Police said he denied committing the crime.

Officers contacted the man when he was rummaging through trash, police reported. When police were pulling up next to the man, he hid behind a large dumpster, according to the report.

Police arrested the man after realizing he had a warrant out for his arrest from Mesa City Court, the report said.

Officers found a small bag of marijuana and a used syringe by the dumpster where the man had hid, police said.

The man was arrested and set with a $500 bond for his probation violation warrant from Mesa City Court, police reported.
