Ever since he left ASU to pursue his rapping career, Genesis has been on the rise in the hip-hop music world. As a member of the crazy, young and talented group Odd Future, Genesis also has his own brand, “High," through which he produces snap-back hats and other clothing items.
So, what's the difference between all these offsets of Odd Future? As the group explained at Pub Rock last night, while Mellowhype solely consists of rappers Hodgy Beats and Leftbrain, Mellowhigh is a combination of these performers with the addition of Domo Genesis.
Before the show began, Genesis took some time to show love to his former school.
“How many of y’all go to ASU?” Genesis asked.
The crowd responded by screaming at the top of their lungs, and it was obvious the venue was filled with Sun Devils.
“Yeah I went there for a while. That’s tight. School is tight,” Genesis said.
Mellowhigh delivered a solid show of both old and classic material, with a few new songs off of the album “Mellowhigh” that dropped Wednesday night. The songs “Yu” and “Troublesome” were easily the biggest crowd-movers.
And by crowd-movers, I mean an assortment of crowd surfing, fighting and being thrown onto the stage. But honestly, the fans were the best part of the show. In fact, the crowd was so wild that security had to stop the show multiple times to fix the gate in front of the stage.
“We’ve only performed one song, and you guys are already crazier than Tucson,” Hodgy Beats said, whose group performed only two nights prior at Tucson’s Club Congress.
After the group’s last song, the crowd chanted, “One more song! One more song!”
At the end of the show, the group's members gave us a chance to meet them and get their autographs at the merchandise table.
If you’ve heard any of their music, you would secretly expect them to be a group of relatively rude performers that got on stage, did their thing and then left — which wasn't the case at all. Mellowhigh was more than happy to take pictures with fans and even stopped to chat with a few lucky crowd members. Mellowhigh saw how crazy fans were about the group's music, and it had no problem returning the love.
