Devil Dish: Every Rose has its thorn

Friday night was tough for basketball fans.

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose suffered another major knee injury, and it looks as if he’ll miss the rest of the season for the second time in as many years after playing only 10 games this season.

The painful thing about sports is that at some point you have to come to terms with the fact that your favorite athlete will start to lose what made him special in the first place.

The punishment the body takes over a physical and grueling season eventually takes a toll on the player, but when it happens to someone in the prime of their career, there’s always the thought of what could have been.

It’s hard to think that Rose will be different upon returning — that somehow he will be able to recover from his latest injury and come back and be that player we’re used to seeing. Or maybe we’re just not ready to give up on him.

I hope he is different. I hope we can see him play at the level that made him a must-watch player for the sake of the sport, the league and ultimately for the sake of Rose himself. Because as fans we’re not ready to see this Rose wilt away.
