Shaquielle McKissic returning to ASU men's basketball for 2014-15

ASU men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek proudly declared to reporters Wednesday that he’s stepping up his “Twitter game” to boost his social media presence.

Sendek went to Twitter again Friday to deliver the team’s biggest news of the offseason so far.

“#shaqisback!” Sendek tweeted.

It was confirmation that the NCAA granted the team’s waiver request to give senior forward Shaquielle McKissic a sixth year of eligibility. ASU cited that McKissic experienced personal hardships that hindered him while playing three seasons in five years.

McKissic will be the sixth returning player for next season, joining junior forward Jonathan Gilling, sophomore center Eric Jacobsen, redshirt junior guard Bo Barnes, sophomore point guard Chance Murray and sophomore forward Sai Tummala.

McKissic started in 26 of the team’s 33 games last season and averaged nine points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

Sendek said Wednesday if McKissic came back, the team would needed to fill only two spots on the roster with incoming transfers. ASU welcomes three incoming freshmen — forward Connor MacDougall, guard Kodi Justice and guard Tra Holder — and transfer freshman guard Gerry Blakes for next season.
