South Mountain Hiking Trail is in no way the most beautiful or breathtaking trail in Arizona. Unless of course by breathtaking, you mean in the most literal sense. The trail will have you wishing you hadn’t stuffed your face with so many crêpes the night before at Jobot (refer to the Best Crêpes award). The main trail snakes up the side of what is perceived to be a small mountain. But after about 35 minutes of hiking, you realize that South Mountain is bigger than it looks. The end result, though, is a satisfying view of Phoenix and Tempe’s skylines and a fleeting sense of physical accomplishment.
