This football season will be a little bit drier.

ASU announced Thursday that it would ban the use of kegs in parking lots used for campus tailgating events. Although the University has a dry campus, alcohol is permitted during special events, including tailgating a few hours prior to home football games.

In April, ASU police Sgt. Daniel Macias told The State Press that kegs facilitate underage drinking at these events by making it easier for an underage person to casually help him or herself to alcohol.

“What we’re looking for is the safety of everyone involved,” Macias said. “The students, the public — we’re looking at ways to address the situation.”

The new tailgating restrictions also include a ban on drinking apparatuses like beer bongs that encourage rapid consumption of large amounts of alcohol, as well as drinking games.

UA and NAU have similar bans.

Athletics director Ray Anderson said in a statement that the athletics department wants to encourage safety at games.

"Tailgating is one of the great traditions of football, but we are encouraging our fans and visitors to act responsibly on game day," Anderson said. "There is a lot of fun to be had at a Sun Devil football game, especially on the field.”

ASU plays its first home game against Weber State on Aug. 28.
