Bravo to Fall Break. Despite the stress of midterms, the four-day weekend is a much-needed respite for many students and signals the start of cooler weather and holiday festivities.
Boo to Mohammed Hamzah Khan, a man who was planning to fly to Istanbul from O'Hare Airport in Chicago and then join ISIS in Syria. Khan was detained by federal agents and charged with attempting to support a foreign terrorist organization.
Bravo to Coming Out Week. Oct. 11 marks the 26th anniversary of the celebration of inclusion, support and community. See our editorial and our splash page here and here.
Boo to Red Bull. Following a lawsuit, it was found that Red Bull is actually a soda. People can claim $10 (or $15 of Red Bull, if your spirits are up to it) as recompense for the "false advertising" in the phrase "Red Bull gives you wings."
Boo-ravo to Indigenous Peoples' Day in Seattle. It is great that the city is choosing to recognize Native Americans instead of Christopher Columbus, but not so great that Italian American activists are demonstrating against it as "almost going too far in terms of political correctness." The native peoples of the Americas deserve recognition — the man who wandered onto the continents almost 500 years after Europe had already "discovered" them and thought he was in India? Not so much.
Bravo to Paula Patton for filing for divorce from Robin Thicke. After Thicke and Patton separated in February, he launched a gross campaign to "win her back" with his newest (and creepiest) album titled "Paula," and while divorce is hardly ever a happy thing, we're glad to see Patton put her foot down.
Boo to suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson for smoking marijuana after being issued bond on a felony charge of child abuse.
Bravo to the U.S. Supreme Court for denying state appeals to retain bans on gay marriage. Although the exact state of gay marriage in the U.S. is still somewhat unclear, this ruling sets the stage for wide-scale marriage equality.
Boo to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for telling women not to ask for raises at the Grace Hopper Celebration. He told women to instead rely on "karma," "the system" and "their super powers" to get what they want.
