ASU alumnus Al Michaels will return to the desert Sunday to be a part of his 10th Super Bowl.
Michaels, 70, is expected to be the play-by-play announcer for the NBC broadcast of the game alongside color commentator Cris Collinsworth.
A former State Press sports editor, Michaels has broadcasted many notable events, including the "Miracle on Ice" during the 1980 Winter Olympic Games and the earthquake during Game 3 of the 1989 World Series. Michaels is the only commentator to broadcast the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals and the Stanley Cup for network television.
Michaels's last Super Bowl was Super Bowl XLVI. The game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots was the most-watched program in the history of American broadcasting at the time.
Michaels recently released an autobiography on his life and experiences titled "You Can't Make This Up." In it, he detailed his time at ASU as a part of The State Press and The Blaze student radio station, saying:
"I was the sports editor for the school newspaper and wrote a column called 'The Hot Spot.' Year-round, I also announced football, basketball, and some track meets as well. I would walk across campus from one class to another and dream of doing the World Series and the Olympics. The dreams were as big as they could be."
Michaels will be on the call for Super Bowl XLIX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday, Feb. 1, on NBC.
