With more than 1,000 registered student organizations at ASU, a few are bound to go unnoticed. With that in mind, reporter Bridget Dowd decided to reach out to ASU’s various locations and spotlight the diverse groups of our school. Whether you’re looking for a new club to join or are just interested in learning about unique student interests, this blog is right for you.

While many people struggle to feel confident in their own skin, Sun Devils Wear Prada at ASU strives to help everyone feel good about themselves. Sun Devils Wear Prada’s mission is to “inspire ASU women to reveal their self worth through personal style.”

Sun Devils Wear Prada member Ellyse Crow, a senior business communication and management student, said the club gives people confidence by helping them express their personalities through their clothing.

“We want to spread the message that everyone is valuable and that they have worth on this campus,” Crow said. “And to be able to express that worth is really cool.”

During their meetings, club members make presentations about different types of style, recreate Pinterest ideas and even bring in professional designers and makeup artists to interact with members.

Crow said the club has helped girls like her feel comfortable wearing red lipsticks or styles that draw attention to them. It teaches them that no matter what their body type, there’s a way they can rock the style they want to wear.

Sun Devils Wear Prada is not a high-fashion club, but more about finding what styles are right for the individual. Crow said it could be summed up in the phrase, “Fashion says, 'Me too,' but style says, 'Only me.'”

Club president and junior psychology major Brenna Goodwin said the club isn’t about telling people what to wear, but more about helping them discover how they want to present their unique traits.

“Other clubs have described us as a slumber party,” Goodwin said. “It’s just an awesome group of people and we have so much fun.”

Goodwin said she has seen many shy people grow from the club and is always amazed by the difference that small changes make.

“Clothes are such an optical illusion,” she said, explaining that stylists will occasionally come in and try different accessories on the members. “A girl just lights up and you see her beauty shining through, and all it took was a scarf in a different color.”

Sun Devils Wear Prada is hosting a fashion show on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in Galvin Playhouse. Tickets to the event are $10.

Goodwin said around 40 students from various organizations at ASU will model clothing styles for almost every occasion. She said each year students have the chance to apply to be models and the club chooses students of all different, races, body types and heights to participate in the show.

After the show, Shari Braendel, author of “Good Girls Don’t Have to Dress Bad,” will be talking about style tips and tricks. Braendel will perform a live show similar to “What Not to Wear,” by picking volunteers from the audience.

In addition, everyone who attends the show will be able to participate in the Sun Devil Shop-Off the next day. Anyone who attends the show will get special discounts at the campus bookstore as well as stores in Tempe Marketplace. A trolley will run between the Tempe campus and Tempe Marketplace during the event to take students back and forth.

Goodwin said the club stresses the importance of realizing that beauty isn’t a competition and that they should empower each other rather than compare themselves to other people.

“Everyone has problem areas or parts of their body that they’re not really comfortable with,” Goodwin said. “You leave feeling really good about yourself, and we have such a blast at every meeting.”

Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of every month. For more information email Brenna Goodwin at brenna.goodwin@asu.edu or visit https://www.facebook.com/sundevilswearprada.
