ASU men's basketball assistant coach Stan Johnson is leaving the Sun Devils for Marquette, according to a report from azcentral sports. The report says that Johnson informed the team of his plans Friday and was made for family reasons.

The move is a little surprising given that when new ASU coach Bobby Hurley was introduced to the media, he announced that Johnson would be retained on staff.

Johnson had been with ASU for two years, and leaves the Sun Devils with a vacancy for a third assistant coach. Hurley has already hired Levi Watkins, who followed him from Buffalo, and Brian Merritt as assistant coaches.

Johnson joins the staff of Steve Wojciechowski at Marquette, where the Golden Eagles went 13-19 in 2014-15.

ASU could end up facing Marquette in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center on either Nov. 23 or Nov. 24.

According to Sun Devil Source, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson wanted Johnson to stay on staff.

Hurley said on Thursday that ASU still needs a director of basketball operations.
