A man is dead after an altercation at Tempe Beach Park Friday, Tempe Police Department officials said.

Tempe PD Spokesman Lt. Mike Pooley said officers arrived at the scene around noon and found the body after receiving a 911 call.

Officers later located the suspect, who is in custody and is cooperating with police. While the details of the incident are unknown at this time, Pooley said there was likely an altercation.

A section of Tempe Beach Park is still locked down as police continue the investigation, he said.

UPDATE: Tempe Police arrested 32-year-old Bruce Paya Friday on suspicion of second-degree murder, Pooley said in an email Saturday.

Paya got in a physical altercation with the victim, killing him at Tempe Beach Park. The two, both of whom are homeless, had met the victim earlier in the week, Pooley said.
