ASU soccer emphasizing depth ahead of matchup with Stephen F. Austin

The Sun Devils have been active in rotating players in their first three games, a trend that will continue

ASU Vs. UNLV Team
ASU soccer team celebrates after a goal off a free kick by senior defender McKenzie Berryhill in the second half against University of Nevada-Las Vegas Friday Aug. 28, 2015 at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. The Sun Devils defeated the Rebels 6-0.

Even though ASU soccer's Monday night game against SDSU was cancelled due to a severe storm just 15 minutes into the game, head coach Kevin Boyd said the shortened contest was beneficial.

Boyd, who assumed the game would continue after a short break, was worried his team wouldn't be able to find the same rhythm that his team had before the rain started.

Boyd said the Sun Devils (2-0) are playing very well this season and that he has specific points of emphasis for his club to improve.

"There's just little details," Boyd said. "The main thing we've been concentrating on is trying to get more of our players ready to rotate in and keep our game playing the same way."

Boyd's top priority is trying to bring the performance of ASU's bench players up to the same level as its starters, which will help his team interchange better.

Rotation players have found success early on this season. In a 6-0 victory against UNLV last Friday, freshman Adriana Orozco scored her first career goal in the 80th minute.

In preparing for this Friday's matchup against Stephen F. Austin, Boyd was more focused on making sure his team plays up to its potential instead of worrying about the opponent.

"There's not a lot we're doing preparing against them," Boyd said. "There's more we're doing just trying to look at who we are and the way that we play. I think that when we're playing our way we're going to be really hard to stop. Most of my attention is on us."

Stephen F. Austin has struggled so far during the 2015 season, but under third-year head coach Wally Crittenden, the Ladyjacks (0-3) have only lost six games in two seasons and never have lost more than three games in a single season.

Crittenden won Southland Conference Coach of the Year in each of his first two years with the program.

The Ladyjacks have dropped their first three games this year –  Stephen F. Austin has been outscored 6-1 in matches with Arkansas, Minnesota and Western Kentucky.

The Sun Devils, meanwhile have won both of their regular season games this year and have outscored their opponents 9-0.

ASU will play Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 7 p.m. in Tempe.
