The Flu is here – are you ready?

The flu season is here, and we are seeing record numbers of flu cases across the state of Arizona.  Here are answers to common questions about influenza (the Flu)

Q: Is the Flu serious?

A: It can be, especially for the very young, the very old, and for people with medical issues like asthma, diabetes, and pregnant women.  The Arizona department of health reports that this year there are 17,000 more cases than last year.

Q: Do I need to get my flu vaccine?

A: YES! The flu can spread easily on a college campus and with an increase in flu cases you are at increased risk.  It is also important to get the flu vaccine so you don’t spread flu to other people around you.

Q: Where can I get my flu vaccine?

A: If you are a student, faculty, or staff member at ASU you can go to any health services location to get your flu vaccine (eoss.asu.edu/health).  No appointment necessary.  Many pharmacies also have the flu vaccine available.

Q: I’m already sick – now what should I do?

A: If you are a generally healthy person without any history of significant medical problems (asthma, diabetes, lung disease) then in most cases your body will get better, but it takes time.  Influenza symptoms can last up to 10 days.  If you have a fever – DON’T go to class or work.  Stay home, rest, drink lots of fluid and use over the counter medications like Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol to help with your symptoms.  Read the instructions and the warnings on the package before taking the medication.  If you have a history of asthma, diabetes, are pregnant, or you are concerned about your symptoms – you should be seen by a healthcare provider.
