Getting a tattoo on Friday the 13th: A poem

Inexpensive tattoos can come with a cost

The end result of a Friday the 13 day.

ASU graphic design sophomore Mia Gilling shows off her new tattoo outside of Lady Luck Tattoo in Phoenix on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019.

The five hour wait for an inexpensive tattoo gave me a lot of time to think...

11:00 a.m.

OK, there aren’t that many people here.

This probably won’t take very long.

Oh, there’s a sign-up sheet?

That’s a lot of names, wow.

OK, page 4 probably isn’t that bad, right?

11:15 a.m.

We should have gotten here earlier.

But an hour early is already pretty early.

I’m sure it’ll pass by quickly.

11:16 a.m.

That guy at the coffee shop was joking about them re-using the needles right?

OK, good.

12:00 p.m.

Oh, I forgot to eat. Whatever, I’m not hungry.

It probably won’t even take that long, I can wait.

12:15 p.m.

Will I pass out if I didn’t eat before?

Is it bad I had coffee?

I’ll be fine, we’re probably next on the list anyway.

12:30 p.m.

I wish we weren’t outside, it’s like 100 degrees out.

At least we’re in the shade.

My legs hurt, I need to stand up.

1:00 p.m.

Oh my gosh, it’s been two hours?

Why haven’t we been called?

I wonder where they are on the list.

2:00 p.m.

Did she really just say it would probably be another two hours to get to us?

Are we just going to sit out here?

We might overheat.

I haven’t had any water.

I’m so thirsty.

I should probably eat somewhere.

Should we leave? What if as soon as we do they call us?

Is this even worth it?

Fine, we’ll leave, but only for an hour.

2:30 p.m.

Another coffee shop. I should just pick the thing that’ll keep me full the longest.

2:40 p.m.

This scone sucks.

Oh right, drink some water.

3:00 p.m.

It’s been 30 minutes, we should probably head back.

3:15 p.m.

The line seriously hasn’t moved?

This better be the coolest tattoo ever.

3:30 p.m.

Oh my gosh, we've been here for hours, are they even near page four yet?

Why are those people signing up? It’s 3 p.m. and they’re on page four. I really doubt they’ll be getting to page 18.

4:00 p.m.

Finally!

Don't they have to shave me or something?

Why are they making me pre-pay?

Oh my god, this hurts so bad. I forgot how much I hate getting tattoos. I’m never getting a tattoo ever again this pain is not worth it. Ow.

4:05 p.m.

Wait it’s over already?

So that’s it? OK.

I wonder how Mia's turned out.

Wait, she’s passed out? Oh, almost passed out, OK.

Is she going to?

What do you even do when someone passes out?

Oh OK, water and sugar, got it. Why didn’t I know that?

4:30 p.m.

OK, well, we all survived. That’s good.

Sure it was five hours in the heat, but I mean, it was only $20 right?

Maybe I’ll just pay full price next time.
