No. 11 ASU wrestling won both of its duals against Iowa State and Northern Iowa on Sunday in Ames to finish the regular season 6-0. The Sun Devils topped the Cyclones 20-15 and won 24-10 against the Panthers.
Iowa State
ASU got off to a quick start against Iowa State, building a 7-0 lead thanks to a major decision for redshirt junior Brandon Courtney at the 125-pound weight class and a victory for redshirt junior Michael McGee at the 133-pound weight class.
The Cyclones responded with three straight victories, including a pin by redshirt sophomore David Carr to give Iowa State a 12-7 lead.
Redshirt senior Anthony Valencia and redshirt freshman Trey Munoz responded with victories of their own to regain the lead for ASU at 13-12.
The two sides split the next two meetings at the 184- and 197-pound levels. Redshirt senior Cade Belshay fell to redshirt senior Sam Colbray, and senior Kordell Norfleet earned a major decision over freshman Yonger Bastida.
Norfleet's win gave ASU a 17-15 advantage, setting up a winner-take-all final matchup at the heavyweight level.
In that matchup, redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz earned an overtime victory over redshirt senior Gannon Gremmel to clinch the team victory for ASU.
Northern Iowa
In the second matchup of the day, ASU and Northern Iowa split the first four matchups. Courtney and redshirt senior Cory Crooks earned victories for the Sun Devils while redshirt sophomore Kyle Biscoglia and freshman Ethan Basile earned victories for the Panthers.
ASU then pulled away, starting with a victory from redshirt sophomore Jacori Teemer at the 157-pound level, followed by a pin from Valencia at the 165-pound level to give ASU a 15-6 lead.
Munoz, Norfleet and Schultz each earned victories to win the dual and finish the regular season undefeated.
ASU will compete next at the Pac-12 Championships in Corvallis, Oregon on Feb. 28.
