Connor Greenwall:
Welcome back to state press play. I'm Connor Greenwall, and today I'm joined remotely by John Shufeldt. It was recently announced that the new ASU medical school being built on the downtown Phoenix campus will be named after John, the John Shufeldt school of medicine and medical engineering at ASU. So John, to get us started, can you tell me a bit about how this all came to be?
John Schufeldt:
Well, sitting there, minding my own business, and one thing led to another, and then it all happened. Actually, that's not true. I was out to dinner with the people from ASU health, and they're talking about all the different things they're doing. And I love ASU, so I'm like, When are you guys at a medical school? Now, this was a couple of years ago, and they all kind of looked really sheepishly, and I remember at the time going, it's kind of a weird look. And then next morning, Dr Crow announces, hey, we're doing a medical school at ASU. And then I realized that, of course, I took credit for it because it was my idea, you know, 12 hours earlier, but that's why I first heard about it.
Connor Greenwall:
and when it came to being named after you, when did you find out about that?
John Schufeldt:
Well, I talked to Dr Crow probably for about the last 18 months, about how I can be involved, and I told him I'd be thrilled sweeping the floors because ASU needs a medical school. ASU will be the best place in the world to do a medical school, and I wanted to be involved, and that's kind of how it started.
Connor Greenwall:
Now going back a little, can you walk me through your career in healthcare, from your first job in healthcare to where you are now?
John Schufeldt:
my first job in healthcare. So my first job in healthcare, I was in emergency department orderly way, way back when I was an ambulance driver as well in college, and then went through pre med in college. I was an undergrad sociology major, and then took all the prerequisite and fortunately, got into medical school at what's now Rosalin Franklin in Chicago, did an emergency medicine residency and then stayed there for a year as an attending another full time job in Naperville, and then moved out to Arizona for the weather and family and started as an emergency department director down in Casa Grande, took basically inherited that contract and then expand it to multiple other emergency departments...
