The heated debate about gun control and the seemingly endless list of school related shootings keeps the issue of guns on campuses at the forefront of most people's minds. SP Weekly finds out what would happen if there were to be a shooting at an ASU campus and how would local authorities handle the crisis. Also, assistant ASU police chief Jim Hardina talks about how students need to prepare for such an emergency which could save their life, and how school officials and professors are told to monitor at-risk behaviors to help prevent a tragedy at ASU.
Week of February 4th As the debate over guns in our society continues to become more intense from all sides of the issue, reporters Sydney Schumam and Courtland Jeffrey explore a different argument: the place of educating people on gun safety to prevent more shootings and how some believe it doesn't make a difference how educated people are on guns.
Week of January 28th Last week the Pentagon announced women would be allowed to serve in combat roles and on the front lines, overturning a 1994 rule banning such service for servicewomen. Captain Jason Mammoser from the ASU Army ROTC sits down with SP Weekly to talks about this change and how it may or may not effect ROTC life for current and prospective cadets.
High hopes for Sun Devil sports over the last few years have only led to sub par achievements, but there is a new philosophy at the top with ASU Athletic Director Steve Patterson taking the helm last March from out-going AD Lisa Love. State Press Assistant Sports Reporter Josh Nacion talks to SP Weekly about his exclusive interview with Patterson and his management approach which has placed ASU back on track for winning in the competitive world of division I athletics.
The death of ASU freshman Jack Culolias shook the ASU community in December, raising the topic of underage drinking and the role fraternities and alcohol play together when off-campus student functions are planned. State Press investigative reporter Nicholas Palomino Mendoza gives us a intimate look at who Culolias was as a person. Mendoza talks about his cover story into the search and recovery of Culolias and the police investigation of Jack's death.
