Few celebrities have fallen harder or faster than the once-savior of our country, Barack Obama. Just a year ago, he was the prophet of a gigantic movement that promised to “change” America; today he is merely an embattled U.S. president, long since stripped of his divine aura, powerless to make America a better place, despite his personal popularity.

The recent talk of health-care reform has drawn an exceptionally visceral reaction from Americans who apparently do not realize how much the government has already done for them. The continuing dilemma of corporate bailouts has many Americans stuck between our historic belief in the free market and our fear of painful economic collapse. Most of us reluctantly supported federal intervention during the past election, but our patience has been tested in recent weeks as one mega-corporation after another topples at the doorstep of our national treasury. It seems that there is no end to the list of companies that are “too big to fail.”

It has been a long time since turnout in an American election was as good as it was on Tuesday. Pre-election estimates of expected turnout have topped 130 million ballots and 65 percent of eligible voters, the highest proportion since 1908.

In response to the growing conflict between economic development and world sustainability, many authors, including a number of our own columnists, have written of the need to reduce our standard of living, cut waste and be considerate of the poorer people in many other countries.
