The air is lighter in spring. The nights are cool, the days temperate and warm. Plants and trees awake from their winter slumber and burst into color. I have lived most of my life at ASU oblivious to the natural beauty of campus. Though they offered shade on torrid summer days and once saved me from dizzy dehydration one blazing afternoon as I sucked the juice from a small armful of bitter oranges, the trees were always just part of the scenery, no different from faces in the crowd.

Of all social rituals, dinner parties will always be my favorite in which to partake and sponsor. An excellent host serves to alleviate hunger no matter its source. His first and most urgent priority is the comfort of his guests. Invite a group of strangers to your home for dinner and they will leave good friends.

I've been in love since I was a little boy. We first met over my grandmother's Peruvian arroz con pollo. I was young then, naïve to her subtleties and striking nuances. I knew her then as food, my love for her as innocent as the affection a child holds for his mother.

In light of rising tuition costs and student loans, pricy textbooks seem little more than fiscal thorns in students’ sides. Though dissent for textbook publishers is widespread among the student body, a special contempt seems to exist for professors who peddle their own books as required reading.

Kharli Mandeville and Ryan Espinoza-Marcus are members of a class ever-shrinking among their friends — non-drivers. SPM brought the two writers together to talk of misadventures, close calls and strange friends encountered on public transit.

Our house is strewn with chaos. Spinning tops, stuffed animals, blocks and dolls sit idly in the living room. My parents' home office has been converted to a playroom, pink-walled and complete with dwarfish dining room furniture set for tea.

I love suits. They're supple, fashionable and downright sexy if well-tailored. Whether made of worsted wool or fine-spun Egyptian cotton, a suit is a wonderful thing that both men and their dates can admire. A suit is an armor that says "f-ck you" to all bubbling remnants of insecurity a man may carry in his belly. In donning one, a man reaps the benefits of confidence and swagger enough for ten.

Among the drone of academia, the heat of relationships and temptations and distractions that abound on campus, a meal is often overlooked.

Perfumes, odors and aromatics of every description have been captured and enjoyed by man since early civilization. In Athens and Corinth, perfumers' shops were frequented as coffee houses are today. According to an old perfumery book titled “A Practical Guide for the Perfumer”, scents were offered in homage to gods and goddesses, used to honor kings and glorify heroes. In ancient Rome, the public love for perfume grew so fervid that people rubbed their dogs, horses, walls and furniture with whatever odors they could afford.

Few plan on waking up in a Fresno bus station one bleary, nauseous morning to a chorus of hungry wolves. Outside of the home, you are vulnerable to attack and harm by countless foes. Lightning seldom strikes through windows and werewolves cannot operate door handles. Escaped convicts, bats, leeches, zombies and STDs are all outside. Stay in the house and the night's worst possible outcome will likely involve eating too much ice cream or falling asleep early. Diets and deadlines aside, both are pleasant fates. Venture into the night and you could be hit by a bus or mauled by giraffes.

Got a woman? No? That's because you don't know how to roast chicken. Do you want that girl in French who's been shyly eyeing you from across the room — the one with cute clothes and the coquettish smile? You could take the typical approach, buy her dinner and see a movie. You could take her on a romantic stroll beside Tempe Town Lake and watch the city lights reflect in obsidian waters. These approaches are all tried and true by your average Tempe bachelor, but let me tell you how to outplay those chumps and win your woman.

Cooking for a crowd can be intimidating even for experienced cooks. With the endeavor comes responsibility, and it can sometimes beget marvelous expense. High expense is the consequence if the host chooses to feature expensive ingredients, such as fish or prime cuts of steak.
