On an overcast Saturday in Phoenix, scores of people in red gathered at the Arizona State Capitol, waving their signs and standing in solidarity with protesters in Wisconsin. Some were former residents of Wisconsin, some knew a union worker there and others came to say “Not in our state.”

History freshman Holly Solis sits outside of the Memorial Union on a brisk afternoon. Spread across her black shirt is a picture of Daniel Radcliffe. By her side is a satchel with the words "Dumbledore’s Army" emblazoned in scarlet and gold lettering. While many people would recognize that as a reference to the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, they might not realize it’s also the name of the ASU club she’s president and co-founder of.

On some Saturdays, you'll hear a symphony of crinkling plastic as you approach the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Inside the courtyard, you'd find toys, clothing, shoes, food and toiletries free for the taking and hundreds of people doing just so, shoving collected items into the provided plastic bags.

Sitting at a small table in the Firehouse, a funky art collective not far from the downtown Phoenix campus, 23-year-old Joanna Lockyear squeezes brown paste out of a tube onto a girl’s skin. With sure strokes, Lockyear sketches a design from elbow to neck. The smell of lavender — an oil she adds to make the paste smell better — tickles the nose.

Every student needs a place to live — and come spring, it's on everyone's mind. Incoming freshmen shop around with anxious parents for the perfectly cool apartment complex, while commuter students finally decide to make the move out of Mom and Dad's. Others tire of the on-campus experience after a year or two of shared living with roommates, suitemates, hallmates and floormates. Eventually, privacy and freedom beckon in the form of (often cheaper) off-campus apartments.

On a Sunday morning in late October, while most Arizona State University students are still sleeping, members of the Hawai'i and Pacific Islander Club trickle into a small room in Best Hall on the Tempe campus. They greet each other with kisses on the cheek. Someone turns the music on and a playlist alternates between Hawaiian melodies and hip-hop beats. The students lounge around, discussing the celebration of a member’s 21st birthday last night, before starting dance practice.
