To any indie rock music aficionado, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual tradition. The event, held in Indio, Calif., plays host to some of the biggest names in independent music and changes its lineup yearly to account for the ebb and flow of the music industry.

The past twelve months have seen new rise to revolution. When tyrannical, out-of-touch leaders refused to drop the reigns in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, the people took to the streets and toppled the administration.

Boo to the possibility of bikes, skateboards and anything else with wheels being banned on campus. Since its invention, the wheel has only helped mankind in furthering our technological advances and its no secret that bikes, blades, boards and scooters are valued forms of transportation on a college campus. However, give a longboard to an inexperienced rider and your leisurely stroll to class just might turn into a live-action game of Frogger. Except, instead of dodging traffic, you’ll be dodging someone in flip-flops and a backwards hat flying toward you at Mach 10. Want to keep your wheels? Walk them.

Monday marked the beginning of another legislation session where Arizona lawmakers will try to finally tackle the issues that have been chasing our state for years and block new ones altogether. In her State of the State address Monday, Gov. Jan Brewer touched on the past as a lesson learned and expressed a vision of hope for the future.

Beginning Monday, pro-gun politicians — this time with the backing of the National Rifle Association — will lock, load and attempt once again to pass legislation that will allow students, faculty and staff to carry firearms on the campuses and into the buildings of Arizona’s public universities and community colleges.

Boo to the toughest sheriff in America running for another term in Maricopa County. Aside from the allegations of overlooked sexual molestation and Gestapo-style raids on the valley’s Hispanic communities, 20 years as king of the Wild West is just too long of a term. It’s time for a change. Most Arizona men Joe Arpaio’s age are trading in their driver’s licenses for fishing poles or moving to retirement communities in Sun City. Give someone else a turn, Joe.

As we begin another semester, our eyes are on the horizon, our thoughts are in the future and our academic goals are back on the front burner.

Another semester has come to pass, and it was certainly filled with news. We would be remiss if we did not review it all. But don’t worry, there will be no test at the end of this review — we’ll leave that for the big, bad professors.

Bravo to the re-instatement of front desk employees in residence halls of Palo Verde East, Palo Verde West and San Pablo. Last week, it came out that the University’s decision to “streamline” residents’ access to front desks failed. Students realized that less eyes meant easier access to the dormitories for shady figures. We salute University Housing for taking this step, even with only several weeks left in the semester. A student’s safety should be the No. 1 priority. They responded to the student concerns about security in the dorms. It takes a lot of character to step forward and admit that a decision may not have been right.

The freshman 15 has become notorious. It is something college students fear and, at one point and time, it made sense.

The idea resembles a promise a 13-year-old might make in a student council election, but on a much larger scale.

The 2007 football season brought great success to the Sun Devils, and Dennis Erickson became a symbol for it.

It is a dismal time for the big three sports — football, men’s basketball and baseball — at ASU. Something went wrong. Several years ago, the future was bright and sports pundits took notice.

We are thankful for the return of Four Peaks Pumpkin Porter, one of the best seasonal beers ever to grace the Valley. It is common to see pumpkin ales, but not porters. We raise our glasses to Four Peaks for coming up with such a unique and delicious concoction. They tap the first keg Wednesday. It is time to for the Occupy Local Brewery movement. Head over to Four Peaks and support the home team. If you have never been, then this is an opportune time for you to experience the magic of Four Peaks and their famous pumpkin porter.

Bravo to the American Institute of Architecture Students at ASU for competing in a food drive. Architecture seniors Mandel McDonnell and James Parker organized the event that spanned across the entire Herberger Institute. It is important to remember those who are less fortunate, and not just at this time of the year. Daily hunger for some is a perpetual problem, not one that comes only in the holiday season. These students have set an excellent example for us to follow on a daily basis. Blessings are being counted as Thanksgiving nears, and hopefully these people will feel blessed this year too.
