Arizona is no longer a forgettable red state. For better or for worse, we have a nationally recognizable profile courtesy of elected officials such as Gov. Jan Brewer and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The State Press is looking to follow six students across all ASU campuses that have committed themselves to a New Year's resolution. We'll be checking in with the students for six weeks to see if they keep their resolution -- or completely drop it. The State Press will document and film each student as he or she works to fulfill their goals.

Bravo to new Arizona Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema of the 9th Congressional District for being sworn into office on her copy of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution is an expression of our shared values and is meant to transcend religious differences. While the practice of national constitutional officers placing their right hand on the Bible when they are sworn into office is all well and good, it can undermine the separation of church and state in our government.

The State Press strives to engage the ASU student body. We want to hear from you. The opinion pages are the forum for students, faculty and staff to
express their views, and we hope our content will inspire people to contribute their own thoughts to the major discussions of the day.

There are few things a student needs to ensure a productive day at the library: Books, pens, laptop, a coffee and Adderall. With the demand for the prescription steadily increasing during finals week, it seems the Adderall craze is devouring students’ lives and some might be feeling incompetent in their academic abilities without it.

Winter break hasn’t been this short in 10 years. Summer vacation is getting longer, and there was that weird fall break thing. While winter break was between 33 and 27 days between 2002 and 2010, students will only have 19 days to rest up this winter. The culprit, according to University Registrar Lou Ann Denny, was the seven-and-a-half A and B sessions. Fall semester is nearing completion, so it’s time to ask if the two additional seven-week sessions are worth the eight- to 14-day vacation sacrifice, and if they are a better alternative to the winter courses traditionally offered within the December-January timeframe.

Bravo to the ASU men's basketball team, which is off to a very hot start this season. If they beat Cal State Northridge on Saturday, the Sun Devils will start the year 8-1 for only the fourth time in the past 38 seasons. Jahii Carson is already receiving national attention as one of the country's top freshmen so far. ASU has benefited from a fairly easy non-conference schedule and hasn't played a Pac-12 team, but it's safe to say that ASU hoops is putting together a dramatic improvement from last year’s disappointing 10-win finish.

Arizona fell under scrutiny again after Mesa’s Westwood High School Principal Tim Richards disciplined two students by forcing them two hold hands for an hour in front of their classmates.

The Internet doesn’t exactly have a reputation as a safe haven for insecurities and personal deficiencies. Unless you’re a member of a specific type of online community, the World Wide Web won’t provide much solace when you’re having a crummy day or feeling short on confidence. Just looking at comments following a YouTube video or an exchange between two Facebook users on a political page is enough to leave Internet users in a stupefied cringe.

Last week, Arizona asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a ruling that thwarted the state’s efforts to execute a law that would prevent public funding from going to health care organizations that perform abortions, namely Planned Parenthood.

Bravo to the holidays finally approaching, making intoxication from spiked eggnog socially acceptable. The art of “nogging” is underrated these days, and it’s time for eggnog to make a comeback. Adding rum or whiskey to the traditional holiday beverage is sure to spice up any holiday shindig. Tis’ the season to get “nogged up.”

For many of us, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season. Trips home during this time can be awkward and uncomfortable for the college student who is begging to grow up.

It might be the most difficult time of year. Deadlines are looming, finals rapidly approaching and now the holidays are here. Luckily, our roommates and friends — the family we choose — can keep us sane. Whether they’re going to make us that last cup of coffee to help us through the night or baking cookies during a study break, friends and roommates are definitely something to be grateful for.

An Israeli airstrike killed the most senior official of the Palestinian political party, Hamas, last Wednesday. But before most Americans could wrap their minds around the event that would leave many dead and wounded, they were bidding adieu to the most iconic of pre-baked goods: The Twinkie.
