With a Catholic upbringing, I haven’t had a lot of exposure to Judaism. Yes, I attended a bar mitzvah here and there during middle school, but that just meant I self-consciously watched and repeated what everyone else in-the-know was doing. So upon the suggestion of a friend, I decided to attend Shabbat at the Rohr Chabad House last Friday.

On Friday night I headed out to Foundry on First in Phoenix to check out the RAW: Phoenix presents JUNCTION put on by Raw: natural born artist, an arts organization that provides independent artists of all creative genres with the resources, tools, and exposure needed to cultivate innovative art. So who else better to go to the showcase with than fellow bloggers Faith (Piece of Craft), Amanda (Broke’s the New Black), and Mackenzie (Spark’d TV)?

Photographic images are designated as either scientific or artistic based on context, expectations and interpretations. However, the pieces in the “Science, Poetry, and the Photographic Image” exhibition form an intriguing combination of the practical mind, the imagination and the form of expression.

It’s not easy to embrace Argentine tango at the start—literally. In order to understand the graceful dance, a dancer has to embody a sophisticated posture, to lean in elegantly, to allow another person to move her and to be smoothly guided.

Last week, an announcement was made in my African Dance class that Nora Chipaumire, a contemporary award-winning dance artist and Zimbabwe native, was teaching a workshop on the Tempe campus that weekend. In my excited decision to attend, I was fortunately unaware of her status before or I would probably have been too intimidated to take the class. In this case, ignorance proved to be bliss.

Beginning Sept. 6, the thesis exhibition of textile-based sculptor Elise Deringer, “Perception and Passage,” will be displayed at the Harry Wood Gallery on Tempe campus. Through the use of filters and containers, the exhibition confronts and explores a permeable, imperceptible border as a place where differing states of mind and being are able meet and turn into something new.

I’ve always noticed a large gathering of international students around the Art Café (attached to the Einstein’s at the Memorial Union) on Monday afternoons, but I usually walk right past it. Last Monday, however, I decided to stop by and get a feel for what was going on.

There is no denying that Anya Melkozernova’s textile designs are bold, dramatic, and delightfully surprising. However, you can’t look at Melkozernova’s work without wondering about the source of the unique twist in each custom piece. The answer lies 4,700 miles away in Puschino, a very small town southwest of Moscow. The Russian native has been in the United States for the past 14 years and has remembered to keep her culture present in her art.

Thanks to a Roberto Montenegro painting and a sighting of Mexican graffiti, I learned about life (but mostly death) this past Sunday. Since July 1, the Phoenix Art Museum has been displaying the Modern Mexican Painting exhibition from the Andrés Blaisten Collection at Phoenix Art Museum. Featuring 80 paintings by 45 of Mexico’s bold artists including Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, and José Clemente, the exhibition shows the striking, definitive look of Mexican art made between 1910 and 1950.

Recently, a friend joined me for coffee at a local Italian bakery. Unsure of what she wanted, she decided to try something she had never had before: a caffé bedouin.

Our faltering economy and job market has taught our generation one thing: to be successful, we must have a tremendous hunger to achieve, and in order to achieve, we must impress.

New York politics took a significant turn to the left on Friday, June 24, in the decision to legalize gay marriage. The legislation went down to the wire when four Republicans eventually swung toward a final vote of 33-29 in favor of the proposal.
