A Romp in the Lake

It’s just after 6:15 a.m. on Nov. 13 at Tempe Beach Park. The sun's barely up. I’m looking at Tempe Town Lake while more people arrive at the 2013 Ironman Arizona Mayor’s Media Challenge.

Jenohn Wrieden (back) and Rick Amalfi testing the “lake above the lake” which receives nuisance flows and seeps over into Tempe Town Lake, causing more problems with the water. Amalfi measures bacteria counts and pH here to see what impact it has on the lake because it goes right into the lake. He says the yellow pigment is created by diatom algae.

The Secrets of Tempe Town Lake

The artificial lake near ASU has always been controversial. Some say it shouldn't exist in the desert, others say it is an economic engine for Tempe.

Literally Speaking: Winter Break

In case you didn't already know, the last week of classes has arrived. Let the dance parties and cheering commence! Or maybe we should wait until after finals. While I finish up the last of my essays, and squeeze in the last bit of studying for exams, I can't help but get excited about the things I have the opportunity to do over winter break. Aside from studying for the GRE and the LSAT (Eeeep, grad school!), and going to work, I will be reading, writing, and cooking. Here are a few of my planned literary and culinary winter adventures: Reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

The 'Fitspiration' Fad and its Following

A supposedly positive take on the concept of “thinspiration,” in which pictures of unhealthily skinny women are used as motivation to eat less and lose weight, fitspiration promotes clean eating and exercise as ways of establishing healthy lifestyles. Weight loss is not the ultimate goal; a total lifestyle change is.

Sparky's Quill: Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address

Incase you missed it last week marked the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.  The actual battle of Gettysburg took place in July of 1863 and was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.  In November of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln visited the small town in Pennsylvania for the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.  He would make a short speech that was secondary to other arrangements on that day, but it was Lincoln’s words that were never forgotten. Can you name 10 great speeches in history?  Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is certainly on there (well if you are American it certainly is), but why do we all revere this as one of the greatest pieces of rhetoric in history?

Eye Candy: Alternative Black Friday

As far as Black Friday sales go, waiting in line, shoving through crowds, and fearing getting trampled by fellow shoppers just isn’t quite my cup of tea.

Staying Focused

For many young adults with ADD or ADHD, they turn to prescription medication like Adderall or Ritalin to help them focus. However, Steckman decided to opt out of any medication.

Literally Speaking: And that's all.

On November 15th, 2013, Barbara Park died after a battle with ovarian cancer. Her Junie B. Jones books prove she truly was a child at heart, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
