WAS THE BEATING A HATE CRIME?
(In response to Athena Salman’s April 27 column, “Transgender hate crime.”)
It’s impossible to say if race was any part of the attack. But the fact that the tension came from her being in the girls’ bathroom and the comments of the workers shows that it is definitely a hate-based crime due to the fact she was transgendered.

Attempts have been made to depict this as some kind of transgender-related crime. It wasn’t. It was a black-on-white race attack. She was attacked as a white woman in a black neighborhood.
