ASU women’s golf took second place at the Pac-12 preview in Kona, Hawaii, hitting a +8 throughout the tournament.

The team lost to UCLA who hit -8, but they beat its Interstate rival Arizona who hit +12 for its last meet of the semester. ASU went up against nine other PAC-12 schools, including UCLA, Colorado, Oregon State and others.

The Sun Devils went with their usual cast of junior Monica Vaughn, sophomores Sophia Zeeb, Roberta Liti, freshmen Linnea Strom and Madison Kerley while facing Oregon State and Washington during the first two rounds of the first day.

The team started strong in the rankings, taking fifth place with +9, tying with Colorado. The individual players for ASU played well, with Strom taking the lowest score with -1.

In the second round, the Sun Devils got a big jump, hitting par as a team to tie UCLA at +9 overall. Each golfer posted a higher score in the second round than they did in the first.

ASU got a good final round of golf but wasn’t able to keep up with UCLA, as the Sun Devils hit -1 but just couldn’t keep up with the -8 UCLA put up. Strom put up her best day with -5, Liti got on par while Vaughn got herself a decent day and +1, Zeeb continued to stay in the positive with +3. Kerley had a really tough day and hit +7.

Strom finished the tournament at second place in the individual ranking, hitting -4 which was just three strokes off of first place. Vaughn also placed in the top 10, hitting +1 which was good enough for eighth place.

For ASU women’s golf, this is their last tournament match for the semester. The team won’t be competing until Feb. 8 when it competes in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes, California. The team will also compete in Arizona next semester as well at the Wildcat Invitational at Tucson in March.
