Despite season highs, Gym Devils struggle in first road meet

Two ASU athletes scored below 9.000 on bars, preventing them from beating either school in the three-team meet.

ASU junior Taylor Allex scores a 9.125, even after a fall on the balance beam. ASU lost to Oregon State in a tough defeat at Wells Fargo Arena on Feb. 20, 2015.

Friday was a night of season-highs for ASU gymnastics, but its first road meet of the season also pointed out areas that still need improvement.

The Gym Devils fell to both No. 2 Oklahoma and Iowa State, 197.475-193.850-193.325, despite holding close to Oklahoma through three rotations.

Senior Taylor Allex impressed on floor again and had a good run on vault, but she wasn't able to hold ASU in the number two spot as the bars proved to be a challenge yet again for the Gym Devils.

Senior Carissa Kraus and freshman Heather Udowitch both scored below a 9, plunking the team into third finishing out the competition.

The freshmen Gym Devils set more career and season-highs in their third meet of the season.

Eileen Imbus led ASU on bars with a career-high score of 9.725. Katelyn Lentz also had a career-high score in the event with a score of 9.550.

Imbus set a season-high score on floor with a score of 9.800.

ASU began on beam scoring a total of 48.550 points, setting a new season-high for the team in the event.

Both Udowitch and freshman Corinne Belkoff matched their career-highs on beam, scoring a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.

Freshman weren't the only ones who broke records. Some Gym Devil seniors set individual highs as well.

Beka Conrad set a season-high score on beam with a 9.725, Kraus improved her season-high on vault with a 9.625, and Kristine Levin set a season-high of 9.700 on floor.

The Gym Devils matched a season-high team score with a 48.900 on floor, but again, it wasn’t enough against the extreme talent of the Sooners.

Oklahoma swept the individual events with three scores of 9.925 in bars, beam and floor and a 9.875 on vault by all-around winner Chayse Capps (39.500).

Senior Allie Salas and freshman Katelyn Lentz competed in the all-around. Salas came in fourth with a score of 38.750, setting her own career-high, and Lentz came in sixth with a score of 38.575.

The Gym Devils will have a week off before competing against Oregon State on January 30 at 5:00 p.m. in Corvallis, Oregon.
