Tempe police reported the following incident Tuesday:

A 46-year-old Tempe man was arrested Jan. 1 on the 50th block of West Third Street on suspicion of disorderly conduct, failing to appear in court and possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to a police report.

Officers contacted the man on a light rail platform after he pulled out a knife and threatened someone with it, police reported.

The person who received the threat said he had just sat down on the platform when the man approached him, according to the report. He said the man sat next to him and began rotating a knife in his hands about 10 to 20 seconds later, police reported.

The man then said, “You are going to get it,” according to the report.

The other man stood up and slowly walked away from the threat, and later said he was afraid the man with the knife would rob him, police reported.

Following his arrest, the man told police that he had thought two men were following him when he pulled out his knife prior to the incident, according to the report.

He said he had planned to use it to protect himself, though he kept the knife closed while in his hand, police reported.

Officers noticed the man had a distinct smell of alcohol and was slurring his speech, according to the report. The man admitted to drinking and had six full beers as well as a half bottle of vodka in his backpack, police reported.

A search of the man also revealed five small baggies, four of which contained crystal meth and one contained marijuana, according to the report.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, police reported.
