An American flag was placed Wednesday, on the pedestrian bridge crossing University Avenue. Students and commuters glanced at this symbol of American pride as they continued their daily routines.

Patriotism at ASU:

ASU clubs have come together to raise money and supplies for victims and their families from Tuesday's terrorist attack.

Engineering students across the nation and at ASU involved in the National Association of Engineering Student Councils will be working in conjunction to raise money. ASU students met on campus Tuesday night to discuss ways to help those involved in the terrorist attack.

Teresa Michaels, engineering and applied sciences chairwoman, said tables will be set up at the Student Recreation Complex, Memorial Union, Tyler Mall and Manzanita residence hall to hand out blue ribbons and collect donations. All the money collected will be donated to the Red Cross.

"Getting $500 would be great, but we would like to go upwards to $1,000," Michaels said.

Students can drop off donations 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today and Friday. Tables at Manzanita will be open additional hours from 4-9 p.m.

Counseling and Consultation Services will also be offering free grief counseling for students affected by the recent events.

A group called When Someone You Love Has Died is designed to help students understand, manage and express their feelings of loss while supporting others, said senior psychologist Carolyn Jones.

"This is a loss for all of us whether we had someone there or not," Jones said.

Counselors will be present in the Memorial Union all week. Counselors will also attend a memorial ceremony sponsored by the Associated Students of ASU at 11:45 a.m. today on the student services lawn.

Campus Republicans will be sponsoring an event to collect non-perishable food items, water, blankets and medical supplies for victims 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today on Hayden Lawn.

The Young Democrats and ASASU will be co-sponsors of the event.

"In a time of crisis, as Americans, we need to be united," Campus Republicans President Christina Derminio said. "We're not light or dark skinned, male or female, Republicans or Democrats, but we're united together as Americans."

Proceeds will go to the East Valley Young Republicans who will be driving a bus to New York to deliver the supplies.
