Cronkite visits ASU, presents journalism award

Legendary television news anchor Walter Cronkite concluded a brief visit to ASU by presenting a prestigious journalism award which carries his name.

ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunication hosted its 18th annual luncheon at the luxurious Phoenician Resort in Phoenix on Wednesday, as over 1,000 students, faculty, alumna and local media members were present to hear "the most trusted man in America" speak.

Cronkite presented journalist Bob Woodward with the 2001 Walter Cronkite Award, which annually recognizes excellence in the field of journalism.

Woodward is currently the assistant managing editor for investigative reporting at the Washington Post. He was unable to attend due to professional commitments, but joined the audience via satellite from Washington, D.C.

Both men spoke about the future of journalism in the 21st century, in addition to contemporary news issues such as America's war against terrorism.

Woodward and his collegue Carl Bernstein won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for his work in exposing the Watergate scandal. He has also authored eight books, including two on the scandal.

Cronkite was an anchor, correspondent and managing editor at the CBS Evening News for over 30 years. His numerous awards include several Emmys.
