A student was assaulted near the Memorial Union Wednesday after an altercation with a man, ASU police Lt. John Sutton said.

Shanan Elving, 26, was arrested on assault charges after he hit a member of the Outing Club with his U-lock bike lock.

According to Sutton, the victim, whose name was not released Wednesday, and another unknown member of the club confronted Elving after they recognized him from a surveillance camera that captured Elving removing items such as tents, videos and T-shirts worth a total of $2,100 from the Memorial Union last week.

When the men decided to call the police, Elving attempted to flee on his bike, Sutton said.

The men tried to restrain Elving until police arrived. The suspect then struck the victim in the head with his bike lock. The victim was later taken to a nearby hospital.

In addition to an assault charge, Elving is also facing felony theft charges for stealing items from the Outing Club.
