Call it slightly ironic, but yes, timely indeed.

His grandfather's homeland is bracing for war with her neighbor, Pakistan, but Arun Gandhi will be talking peace in Tempe.

Gandhi, grandson of legendary freedom fighter Mohandas K. Gandhi, will be the key speaker at Tempe's "Together we're better celebration," on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19.

Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence had inspired Martin Luther King Jr. to visit India in 1959. King had already incorporated Gandhi's techniques of passive resistance in his fight for civil rights in America.

Arun Gandhi will address the public at 10 a.m. at the Tempe Public Library on January 19 and will speak at Tempe's Diversity Awards function at the Tempe Mission Hotel at 6 p.m. He heads the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence (www.gandhiinstitute.org), an organization that promotes his grandfather's teachings worldwide.
