You don't need to leave ASU to buy a bike. A Scottsdale group will be on campus today to sell bikes cheap.
For $20, the Handlebar Helpers Program will be selling reconditioned commuter bikes at the Memorial Union on Orange Mall. The sale, sponsored by the Associated Students of ASU's bike co-op, will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
John Burg, Handlebar Helpers' bike shop manager, said there will be 60 bikes on campus. In past sales, he said the bikes have sold out within an hour and a half.
"(We'll be bringing) everything from mountain bikes to cruisers," Burg said. "None of them have a really good paint job, but they all come with new brakes and tires."
Today's event will be the third event of its kind that the Handlebar Helpers Program has put on at ASU. The group plans on having a sale once a semester.
Private citizens donated most of the bikes. Once at the shop, community volunteers repair the bikes. Volunteers who put in time are often able to earn their own bike.
The money earned from the sale will go back into the Handlebar Helpers Program.
Handlebar Helpers began in 1994 when Scottsdale residents collaborated with the city of Scottsdale recreational staff. The city's purchasing and legal departments worked together to allow city surplus property to be donated to the program. The program is primarily staffed by volunteers who pick-up donated bikes and help recondition them.
