ASU head football coach Dirk Koetter and recruiting coordinator Tom Nordquist have snared their first commitment of the new recruiting season.

Tempe Marcos de Niza High School defensive end Brett Palmer verbally committed to the program Thursday during a phone call with Koetter. Verbal commitments are non-binding until a recruit signs a national letter of intent next February.

Palmer, who also played tight end for the Padres, said Koetter didn't tell him what position he would play but that he said "defensive line for sure."

Washington also offered Palmer a scholarship. Nevada-Las Vegas, Northwestern and most Pac-10 schools expressed interest in the 6-foot-4-inch, 265-pound junior lineman.

Palmer was unsure if he would take any of his official visits this fall; he hinted that his verbal was not 100 percent solid.

"I might, I still have to talk that over with my coaches," he said. "It's still early, though. ASU, right now, is pretty solid. If other teams want me bad enough, I may have to consider that."
