The Arizona Board of Regents narrowly approved a 3.9 percent resident tuition hike for the 2002-2003 school year today. The board rejected the 12 percent raise sought by the three university presidents.

Nonresident tuition will increase by 7.25 percent. Arizona residents will pay $2,583 for tuition, and out-of-state students will pay $11,103 per semester.

ASU President Lattie Coor had joined the presidents of UA and NAU in proposing a 12 percent increase to offset state budget cuts.

ABOR voted on the tuition rates at a meeting at NAU. The $96 resident tuition increase passed by a 6-5 vote. The $750 non-resident increase was approved unanimously.
