ASU President Michael Crow named the current vice president of student affairs, Christine Wilkinson, to the position of senior vice president and secretary of the University on Wednesday.

"I looked forward to accepting the position when it was offered," Wilkinson said. "I'm excited about being the individual chosen [to fill the position]."

Wilkinson's new role will be effective Oct. 1. She has held her current position since 1990.

Wilkinson's current role as vice president of student affairs includes strengthening the quality of student life on campus and handling a majority of programs and services outside the classroom.

"Christine's breadth of knowledge of the University, her deep roots in the community and her ability to advance our mission to move ASU in a new direction, make her the ideal person to assume this critically important role," Crow said.

Wilkinson began her career at ASU in 1970, starting as director of student activities, and has held a number of other positions at the University since.

The role of senior vice president and secretary of the University is yet to be fully determined, but Wilkinson said she would be providing leadership to a number of projects that will enhance the University.

James Rund will become interim vice president of student affairs, while the University conducts a nationwide search for someone to replace Wilkinson.

Rund is currently the associate vice president for student affairs.
