The Sun Devil men's golf team will head back to action today after a month-long hiatus when competing in the Fresno State-Lexus Classic.

The 54-hole event at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif., will mark ASU's first two-day event of the year and just its second tournament of the fall. Sun Devil head coach Randy Lein is looking at the fall season as a way to gauge the progress of his players. But he also wants to see them play well.

"Traditionally, we play a lot of players and try to play the best we can," Lein said. "After last year and how poorly we played, it's more important to play well this year."

Lein is trying to guide ASU back to familiar territory. In his nine years in Tempe before the 2001-02 campaign, the Sun Devils had won seven Pac-10 championships, three West Region titles and one national championship.

But last season was quite a different story. ASU finished 20th in the West Region and did not qualify for the NCAAs for the first time in 19 years.

"Last year, the people outside the program wondered what happened. But we lost four All-Americans, (junior) Chez (Reavie) was out half the season with an injury and (Brian) Nosler left after two tournaments," Lein said. "It was just one thing after another. I was using Band-Aids the whole year to try to put out a competitive field. Now, we're working back to where we're expected to be."
