Local Reggae band Azz Izz performs at Live at the Lakes at Tempe Beach Park Sunday as a part of a free concert series which will occur every Sunday until December.

Approximately 200 hundred spectators gathered Sunday at Tempe Town Lake for a free concert featuring reggae group AZZ IZZ.

April Bojorquez, an anthropology senior, said it was nice to see Tempe Town Lake being utilized.

"It's a great outdoor social event," Bojorquez said.

Sunday's concert was the second in a series of free Sunday concerts called "Live at the Lake," which is sponsored by the City of Tempe.

Live at the Lake will continue until Dec. 1, with Sunday concerts every week, featuring a variety of musical groups from Latin music to reggae.

Vice president of operations at the event, Kevin Koziol, said the goal of the Live at the Lake series is to create a gathering point for the whole Valley.

"We want to make this a regional park," Koziol said.

He added that the concerts are going to offer a variety of music to attract a diverse crowd.

"The programming is geared toward the ASU community as well as the Valley in general," Koziol said.

While sipping on Chardonnay with several companions, Scottsdale resident Charlie Yerkes, 47, said he attended the Sunday concert last week and decided to invite some friends this week.

"It's a great time of the year to relax outside," Yerkes said.

A member of AZZ IZZ, Steve Strauss, who is a Tempe native, said it was great to see the City of Tempe put together such a good event.

"I think the city is finally embracing musical art," Strauss said. "It's Sunday, it's nice out, it's a no-brainer … It's great."

According to Ann Kodani, a medical student at Glendale's Southwest College, the Sunday concert had a very relaxed atmosphere and was a perfect excuse to hang out with her friends.

Five more Sunday shows are scheduled before Dec. 1.

Thereafter, the series starts again in February and will run for 16 more weeks.
