ASU tennis finished out the weekend with a successful road trip in California.
The women's competition concluded Monday with players advancing far in the singles main draw as well as the doubles main draw. The men's side found even more success with a doubles team winning its championship and an individual going to the finals.
The women finished the Omni Hotels West Region Championships in San Diego without a title but still displayed an impressive outing. Third-seeded ASU senior Adria Engel advanced to the semifinals but was defeated by second-seeded senior Sara Walker of UCLA (7-5, 6-2). Walker then fell in the final round to senior Jewel Peterson of USC (6-2, 6-2).
In the doubles main draw, the ASU team of senior Mhair Brown and junior Cindy Sureephong advanced to the final round but was defeated by USC's team of Peterson and senior Tiffany Brymer (8-5).
The pair of Brown and Sureephong made it to the finals by defeating the other USC tandem of seniors, Maureen Diaz and Anita Loyola (8-5), in the semifinal round.
The men faired even better at the Omni Hotels VIII — South Championships held in Malibu, Calif. Junior Chris Stewart made it to the finals of the consolation singles draw but was defeated by freshman Chris Surapol (8-6) of UCLA.
Stewart's biggest success came more from doubles play than the individual draw. The sixth-seeded team of Stewart and junior Oliver Charroin took home the championship in the doubles main draw with their upset win over fifth-seeded juniors Diego Acuna and Calle Hansen of Pepperdine (8-2).
Stewart and Charroin advanced to the final round by defeating senior Leopold Graeubig and freshman Michael Wojnarowicz from Loyola Marymount (8-4).
By winning the final round, Stewart and Charroin earned a spot in the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, which will be held at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas on November 7-10.
