Both the ASU men's and women's tennis teams participated in fierce competition throughout the weekend.

The women competed at the ITA Regional Championship in San Diego while the men were in Malibu, Calif.

The Sun Devil women enjoyed success from their top-ranked player Adria Engel, who was seeded third in the tournament. Engel defeated Sarah Gregg (6-1, 7-5) from UCLA in the singles main draw.

She then defeated Lindsey Marvel from California State at Long Beach (6-1, 6-0). Engel then advanced to the third round by beating Arizona's Debbie Larocque (6-2, 5-7, 7-5). Engel is slated to play Sara Walker of UCLA in the final round.

Seventh seed ASU's Mhair Brown could only manage to advance to the second round in the singles main draw. Cindy Sureephong and Joselyn Burkett were the only other Sun Devils in the singles main to advance to the second round.

In the doubles main draw, the only ASU team to advance was Brown and Sureephong. They are to compete against UCLA's Loncaric and Gordan.

On the men's side, the most impressive ASU player was senior Pim Van Mele who advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Regional at Pepperdine's Ralph-Straus Tennis Center.

He defeated Mike Placek of UC Santa Barbara (6-2, 6-2) in the opening round. In the second round, Van Mele defeated Aaron Yovan of UCLA (6-2, 6-7, 6-4). He advanced to the third round by beating UA rival Carl Hagman (7-6, 4-6, 6-2). Van Mele then faced top-seed Tobias Clemens from UCLA who defeated him (6-0, 6-3).

The Sun Devils' Oliver Charroin advanced to the semifinal round in the consolation draw and is slated to face Michael Wojnarowicz of Loyola Marymount. Charroin defeated Jaako Asuja (6-3, 6-2) of LMU in the quarterfinals.

In the doubles matches, sixth-seeded ASU team of Oliver Charroin and Chris Stewart advanced to the semifinals. They defeated Alex Anselme and Mike Placek (8-5) of UCSB in the semifinal round.
