Devil Dish: Soccer streakers, firecrackers show us real fans

Not all Arizona sports fans are as bad as they say. True, when the Diamondbacks were down a single run in the NLDS, I watched more than half of the fans file out before the bottom of the ninth. But last week, my faith in Phoenix fandemonium was restored.

The fans of the Mexican and Colombian national soccer teams put us all to shame when the teams visited the BOB on Feb. 12. I arrived 30 minutes before match time to 30,000 screaming fans and left 30 minutes after the game's end to about 20,000 screaming fans.

A streaker made the field his personal stage, a firecracker thrown from above exploded like a cannon by my feet and the entire stadium broke out in a beer fight. That's what attending a game should be. Soccer isn't just the best sport in the world, it's the best in Arizona - just ask the fans.
