An ASU West student died, and two other students and a professor suffered injuries, returning from a sociology field trip to Mexico on Tuesday.
Shequila James-Hardeman, 26, an administration of justice senior from Phoenix, was killed in the single-car accident.
According to the Department of Public Safety report, the accident occurred Tuesday night while the car was heading west on Interstate 10, near the junction of Interstate 8, approximately 40 miles south of Phoenix.
According to the report, Jermaine Murphy, 29, an applied sciences sophomore, was driving a 1997 Oldsmobile sedan in the left lane and swerved to avoid a stopped car.
Murphy allegedly lost control, veered off the road and rolled the car.
According to reports, all the passengers were wearing seatbelts.
Sociology senior Latoya Colley and Kristin Koptiuch, an associate professor of anthropology, were also injured in the accident. All three were treated at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.
ASU West is making counseling services available to students affected by the death.
"We realize this is difficult news to hear, particularly for students in our tight-knit community," said Jo Madonna, dean of Students at ASU West. "We want students to know that if they wish to talk with a counselor at ASU West, they should take advantage of the services offered by the University."
For counseling services, students may call the Career Services and Personal Counseling Center at (602) 543-8124.
