If you don't know who David Beckham is, you were probably born here and never spent much time out of the United States. The football (read: soccer) icon from England's Manchester United said last week that he is interested in coming to the States because he is fed up with the British media and feels Americans are some of the best fans in the world. Hopefully, someday he'll be right.

With the arrival of 13-year-old soccer phenom Freddy Adu and our men's quarterfinal finish at this year's World Cup, Beckham would hasten the inevitable. It is only a matter of time before Americans realize that rooting for your country is a whole lot more fun than rooting for a nearby city, and soccer is the only sport where that is possible. If you're a skeptic, just check out Manchester United vs. Club América of Mexico in Los Angeles on July 27. Once we come to grips with this, then we really can be the best sports fans in the world.
